In the 1980s, Autodesk focused its efforts on offering a "graphics-only" application. However, with the arrival of Windows 3.1, the market for commercial graphics apps began to grow and Autodesk released its own dedicated software for the platform. Autodesk launched a complete redesign of AutoCAD in 1998, incorporating its "rapid application design", but also separating out specialized design applications, including free-hand drafting and sketching applications and a basic DWG (drawing) application.
Since 2005, AutoCAD has included "AutoCAD WS" functionality as part of the operating system, which includes a new GUI user interface. This functionality is delivered via the Microsoft Windows operating system and supports Windows Aero, Windows 7 Aero, and Windows 8 Aero, but not Windows XP Aero. AutoCAD WS was formerly bundled with Windows 7, but the bundle was discontinued in 2012.
As of 2018, Autodesk products are available as either browser-based or desktop CAD software. The desktop editions are available on Windows, macOS, and Linux operating systems, while browser-based versions can be used on any of the three operating systems, but are often platform specific.
A number of 3D content creation software applications, such as LightWave and V-Ray, use the CAD application architecture as a digital bridge to provide a fast path to import/export to and from 3D scene files or export of layered CAD files.
