I am pleased to recommend Collanos Phone. The concept is very good: it has potential for growth. Collanos Phone is an IM and VoIP (phone) application, which may be purchased separately. When purchased together with Collanos Phone it is a far more powerful application than either one on its own.
Collanos Phone can register a SIP/VoIP phone number and download a menu of telephony applications from the Collanos Phone website. From within the application, you can place and answer audio and video calls, send instant messages (IMs) to other Collanos Phone users, and engage in text chats.
Placing voice calls from within the application is one of the strongest features of Collanos Phone. What you can do is choose how many people you want to talk to, and where the call should go. You can then call that number, at whatever time is convenient for you, and hear the call come through your computer. The calls will almost always be free, and are full duplex: you can talk and the caller can talk and hear your speech.
I tried it for a few days using the phone number (800) 751-3260 that’s advertised in the Collanos Phone commercials. It is a “free phone number”, but to register a SIP phone number with it, you must first sign up for a hosting account. You get 50 free minutes, which you can use with free calling to landlines and cellphones in Canada (700 and 950 numbers), and 300 free minutes to make calls to the US (800 and 888 numbers). After that, you are charged per minute of use.
I also did a second round of testing with a Canadian number for a price of 4.50 cents a minute – in my version of Collanos Phone, you cannot use American (800 and 888) numbers and you cannot use landline numbers (700 and 950). I found this to be very annoying for several reasons:
1. It is an inconvenience to me to have to wait for 8 or 15 minutes while the free voice minutes are being used up, and to go through a registration process with yet another website
