History
Early history
The first edition of AutoCAD was developed by John Walker, who used it for his graduate work at Cornell University. Walker released AutoCAD, a digital drafting program for the Motorola 6800 family, in August 1982, although the program was already being used by engineers at General Electric. This initial version, initially known as "GE-400", had a start-up screen featuring a cartoon of a dog sniffing a light bulb and a box captioned "As Seen on GE-400". The user could select between "Layout" and "Drafting" modes, and also started with a blank scratchpad.
Autodesk was incorporated in January 1985. The company was founded by John Walker, along with Tom Haefeli and Sanjit Roy, to produce Computer-aided design software. In April 1985, the company acquired the rights to the software and source code, which was at this time referred to as the "D-400" program. The name "AutoCAD" was chosen to describe the program's ability to "automatically control the design process".

3D modeling
3D modeling is a feature of AutoCAD which allows users to model solid and surface objects, create a variety of features such as holes, chamfers and fillets, and print a 3D model.
