AutoCAD and the Road to the Mouse
In the late 1970s, the first CAD software was the program Borland Draw. Originally released as a microcomputer application, Borland Draw featured a small grid that could be dragged around a drawing. A few years later, similar products were being sold.
One of the more significant such products was the brand Autodesk's AutoCAD. In addition to a number of other features, the software became popular because of its ability to create true 2D drawings, an ability that Borland's software could not do at the time. It was also one of the first CAD programs to feature a vector-based edit. This was a significant advancement, as vector-based graphics allow the user to do things that had previously been reserved to a high-priced designer, such as resizing and repositioning shapes and paths without impacting the overall look of the drawing.
Although AutoCAD was initially released in December 1982 as a desktop application running on microcomputers with internal graphics controllers, it wasn't until several years later that the program gained significant adoption among CAD users. It was not until the late 1980s and early 1990s, however, that AutoCAD began to demonstrate its current worldwide success.
Before AutoCAD was introduced, most commercial CAD programs ran on mainframe computers or minicomputers, with each CAD operator (user) working at a separate graphics terminal.
The first AutoCAD was developed on the desktop and could be used on minicomputers. Although it could not be used on microcomputers, it was possible to import data from the system and create drawings on a personal computer. The program was initially developed on the PC platform. History
AutoCAD was originally built on the Simula 67/System, a high-level programming language similar to BASIC, but with objects and classes. According to AutoCAD itself,  it was first released in 1989. The previous AutoCAD program (in use from 1989 until 1995) was called Advanced Desktop Systems (ADS) and was developed by the same company. It was based on the flagship product Autocad (in use from 1988 to 1989) and was a Simula-based graphics program. When Autocad was re-built in 1987, the existing ADS code was rewritten in Simula 68 and became AutoCAD's first version.
AutoCAD-R has support for 2D CAD features, such as line, arc, polygon and circle. These support features are modeled in 3D and in 2D. 3D is available in AutoCAD from the 2007 release. Also since AutoCAD 2008, architectural drawings can be modeled and viewed from multiple angles. This means that the previously three-dimensional architectural drawings could now be displayed in front and behind the user. This also gives rise to the use of the AutoCAD term "on-plane" for architectural viewing.
The program has been the most widely used CAD software for mechanical drafting. However, since the introduction of 3D solid modeling, it has lost its dominance. It also competed with other CAD programs such as QuickenCAD which was developed in-house for the U.S. government by its original developer, Quicken Computer Products Inc., and SolidWorks.

AutoCAD allows users to create and edit many different types of objects. The object properties are displayed in a Properties box for each object.
An important feature of AutoCAD is its ability to save the drawing as it is being developed. There are two types of saving:
 "Save" means that the drawing will be saved and then displayed as a page of the current drawing. It does not write the drawing into a file, but rather retains the information in memory. This means that when the computer is shut down, all of the information in the drawing will be lost.
 "Save As" allows the drawing to be saved as a PDF, XPS, AI or WMF file (see below), which can be saved to the hard disk in an external program such as Adobe Acrobat, which can
