In Chapter 1, we learn that the main character, María Fernanda, is a student in a private school in Mexico City. In addition to being a straight-A student she is also an accomplished ballerina and performer. She craves attention and admiration from her classmates and teachers. Her favorite activity is public speaking where she can capture the spotlight and become the center of attention. She is a sleepwalker, and we find out that she was born this way. The first time we see her sleepwalking is after she has read her speech in front of the class. She has trouble getting to sleep and says something like “goodnight” to her mother and leaves for bed. Then it describes how she walked past her mother's room and opened the door to the roof where she spends that night. The next morning when María Fernanda wakes up on the roof, she goes downstairs and has breakfast with her family before going off to school.  She had no idea where she was.Later on in the story we see her sleepwalking again when she is practicing ballet in the rain. Her mother is worried about María Fernanda because she has been hearing her sleepwalking a lot lately and wants to help her daughter in any way that she can. Her mother decides that they should take a trip to Chetumal, Mexico for a few days just to get away from things and have some time with one another. She tells María Fernanda, but she does not seem too excited about it. In Chapter 4, when they arrive in the town of Chetumal, they stay at a hotel located right on the beach called Hotel Los Arcos.  María Fernanda loves the beach and has a lot of fun splashing in the water. She is especially happy when she comes across a little boy who plays with her in the ocean. She goes to bed early that night, but then she begins to hear strange sounds outside her window. The next morning, when her family gets up for breakfast, they find out that there was a serious fire in the hotel next door. They are able to escape safely by climbing out the window onto their balcony. However, María Fernanda's room is still filled with smoke and so she doesn't want to go back to it alone so she decides to stay outside with her family.  Later that day, María Fernanda's family decides to go back to their hotel room. Once they get there, they can't get in because it's locked from the inside. So they decide to find a way in through the balcony door and try to pry it open. Luckily, her mother was smart enough to put a chair in front of the door before leaving and so when they try throwing debris through the window there they smash the window and get in. María Fernanda goes back into her room and is startled when she sees that an old woman is sleeping inside her room. 558eeb4e9f3210
