AutoCAD is a combination of a drafting program (the Drafting application) and a 2D/3D mechanical engineering program (the Mechanical application). Most of the functionality of AutoCAD is contained in the Mechanical application; the Drafting application is mostly a front-end to the Mechanical application.
The basic version of AutoCAD is AutoCAD LT, a free, personal use product. The basic version includes only the AutoCAD Mechanical application. A version called AutoCAD LT 2020, or just LT 2020, is a free and open source computer-aided design (CAD) software application (and thus it is not the same as AutoCAD LT). LT 2020 is no longer released; instead, one can download the current version of the source code from the 3D-CAD website. LT 2020 is available under a proprietary license; the source code can also be downloaded from the SourceForge website. The AutoCAD LT 2020 source code is bundled with the source code for the AutoCAD Mechanical and other applications.
History
The AutoCAD brand was originally intended to be the brand name for a completely new computer-aided design software application, but this was not approved by Autodesk. The AutoCAD brand name was assigned to the software bundled with the PC-10 computer, which was developed by Computer House, a Dutch computer distributor. In the 1980s, while the application was being developed, the name AutoCAD was also used for the hardware platform (such as the PC-10) from which the application was running.
AutoCAD LT
AutoCAD LT is the basic version of AutoCAD. AutoCAD LT includes the AutoCAD Mechanical, AutoCAD Civil 3D, AutoCAD Electrical, and AutoCAD Structural applications, among others. It is free to use for personal use, and purchasers of AutoCAD LT receive a free trial version of AutoCAD Mechanical.
Purchasers of AutoCAD LT are also granted a 30-day free trial of AutoCAD LT 2020, a complete release of AutoCAD LT.

Revit
 Revit is a suite of computer-aided design applications produced by Autodesk Inc. for the real-time simulation of architectural designs and for design review. Revit was first released in 1994. The software was originally designed for construction work; however, it quickly proved useful for architectural design. Like AutoCAD, Revit supports multiple coordinate systems, including the software unit of measure system.
The software features a parametric modeling capability, including support for parametric solids and surface modeling. It also features a 2D/3D printing module.  Revit is mainly used to design and visualize architectural projects.
Revit's interface was based on the Graphical User Interface (GUI) introduced by MicroStation. The name, "Revit" was chosen to mean "regenerative" and to emphasize the tools' ability to quickly rebuild design elements. Revit was designed with the creation of architectural project models as its primary purpose, although other purposes are supported.
In 2002, Autodesk acquired the Revit software and its associated intellectual property, including the Revit 360 and Autodesk 360 applications for visualizing and editing Revit models, and the REVIT code base.
