History
AutoCAD's beginnings
The AutoCAD trademark was established in 1980. It was developed at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), headed by Thomas R. Thomas, a graduate of the MIT Artificial Intelligence Lab. Thomas had previously worked on Altsys Studio. When Thomas was asked to investigate the future of computer-aided drafting, he started working on a computer program called CAD2D. Thomas hired two MIT student interns, David S. Baker and Bill Lueders, to work on the computer program CAD2D. They in turn hired their friend, Tom Ball, to work on it. They developed an early version of the program using the MIT-6, an IBM PC-compatible computer with a DEC microprocessor. The program was demonstrated to Cambridge Computer Centers in February 1980. The first version of the program was made available for purchase in March 1980.

Interoperability between AutoCAD and other AutoCAD-related software: There is no built-in interoperability between the two applications, however AutoCAD can be installed on top of a Microsoft Windows 2003 Server or a Windows Server 2008. Some attempts were made to integrate AutoCAD and other AutoCAD-related applications together.
In the mid-1990s, The Rocket Science Group released Microsoft Activation Manager (MASM), a software product to allow Windows programs to be run from DOS. It required AutoCAD to be installed on the computer.  MASM provided an "AutoCAD" command for this purpose.  This activation of AutoCAD and AutoLISP was the basis of the launch of AutoLISP programs.
File format
AutoCAD uses an open, platform-independent XML-based file format named DXF.  The DXF file format was initially introduced as a Microsoft specification in 1990. The file format is a binary format for storing data with rich graphical or design information. It is an open standard under the Open XML specification initiative.
DXF can contain both geometric and non-geometric data. In contrast to the older, proprietary, popular DWG format, the DXF file format does not specify a definite hierarchy. Each element of a drawing can be added to the same drawing. Parts of a drawing can be grouped into subgroups, similar to layers.
For each element of the drawing, the DXF file format contains a set of tags, which specify the geometric and non-geometric information of the element. It is possible to write comments (markup) inside the DXF file.
