The first version of AutoCAD (version 1) was released on November 17, 1983. This was the first version of AutoCAD designed to allow users to view and work with drawings on low resolution, hand-held devices such as the Apple ][e. Like most CAD programs of the time, AutoCAD used the ASCII-based point-and-click (keyboard-based) command set. The command set allowed users to draw and edit geometry using simple commands such as "Select" or "Move". Additionally, users could modify drawn geometry by applying geometric constraints or by using the Drawing Edit Tool. The earliest releases of AutoCAD used hardware graphics acceleration to accelerate the display of geometric objects.
The first version of AutoCAD was a 16-bit program. During the first years of the program's release, there were no large-scale distribution issues or compatibility issues with the Macintosh. Users could also continue to use their existing licenses for Dymo software (a cross-platform label maker) with AutoCAD, and a cross-platform version of AutoCAD was also developed that could import/export to/from Dymo software. In the early years, AutoCAD had a somewhat slow start but eventually became the dominant CAD system. AutoCAD was not the first CAD system to be designed and the first to be released for the Apple II. It was however, the first system that made the shift to desktop software and the first to support true graphics-based editing and drafting workflows.
In late 1984, after about two years of development and over one million units sold, Autodesk released the first version of the company's CAD software, AutoCAD LT. This was a lower-cost, low-end version of the program designed for use with the Apple IIgs. This was the first time that CAD software was actually offered on the Apple II. It was also the first CAD program to be released without programming skills or royalties to be paid to Autodesk. Autodesk claimed that it was the first direct competitor to Microstation. Its use of the Apple IIgs accelerated the Apple II product line and helped revitalize the Apple II as a viable tool for businesses. Because of this, the Apple II became the dominant home computer for CAD and AEC businesses. AutoCAD LT would also be the first version of AutoCAD to be sold on Apple's App Store.
