1. Descriptions
AutoCAD is one of the world's most popular 3D applications. One estimate suggests that it is used by as many as 10% of all users of 3D software. The programs are used by hobbyists, commercial artists, architects, engineers, and manufacturers of everything from furniture to custom buildings.
It is capable of creating two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) drawings, and doing so interactively, automatically, or with data prepared by another program. The AutoCAD operator can do the following:
• Plot, modify, and annotate 2D shapes such as lines, circles, and polylines
• Create, modify, and annotate 3D shapes such as 2D solids, wireframe models, surfaces, meshes, and their interiors
• Connect 2D and 3D shapes
• Create and edit drawings with block reference, sheets, and guides
• Add text, dimension, arrows, circles, and other features
• Rotate, move, scale, and align drawings to create custom views
• Import, draw, and edit data to create more complex models.

2. User Interface
AutoCAD uses the Windows graphical user interface (GUI) and a custom programming language that takes advantage of the GUI.
A basic window in AutoCAD contains the following elements:
• Left-hand pane contains the drawing environment and graphics tools.
• The left pane contains an area that is free for drawing, as well as tools for converting between 2D and 3D
• The center pane displays dynamic information about the drawing.
• Right-hand pane contains a palette of the available drawing tools.
The Windows operating system (OS) provides an application programming interface (API) that standardizes how programming applications can communicate with the OS. The API allows AutoCAD to manage windows and draw window regions. An applet is a small programming application that can be downloaded to an end-user's computer from the AutoCAD Web site.
