File formats
AutoCAD files may be stored in any of three general formats: DWG, DXF and MDD. The format of the file is chosen by the user, or set by the designer and the exporting party when setting up the drawing.
AutoCAD is capable of reading and writing most of the widely used design software file formats used for 3D modelers and CAD software, as well as the more general industry standard file formats such as DGN, SVG, DXF, SLD, PDF and IFC.
DWG
DWG (Drawing Interchange Format) is the native drawing format of AutoCAD and one of the only two native AutoCAD file formats, the other being DXF. It is used to define the structure of AutoCAD and a variety of AutoCAD-based (i.e., not just 3D modeling) drawings. DWG is essentially the ultimate in file format and size. It is the most commonly used CAD format. 
DWG is a compact binary file format for representing objects (objects are the elements that make up a drawing, e.g. lines, arcs, circles, etc.) and their properties. It was the predecessor to both DXF and the more popular PDF. In an AutoCAD DWG drawing, the properties of objects are stored inside of the objects in an array called the Property Set. The Property Set for any given object defines, among other things, the position, color, linetype, etc. of the object, as well as the style (Fonts, Line color, Line style) and annotation of the object.
DWG files store every drawing element (object) in a separate file. This is not the case with PDF. Because DWG stores every object in its own separate file, drawing files are typically very large. At the same time, DWG is a native format, so it is very robust and widely supported.
DXF
DXF (Drawing Interchange Format) is a somewhat larger file format used for 3D modeling and 3D printing. It is essentially DWG with a higher-level set of data blocks such as Surface, Polyline, Point, Solid, etc. It also uses a different, more robust naming convention for lines and shapes. It
