History 
AutoCAD was originally developed by Ashton-Tate and funded by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC), who used it as a CAD system in the late 1970s, and the first version of AutoCAD was released in 1980.
The first AutoCAD release was an interface extension to the HP 110 and HP 110-II CAD drawing programs, and was known as the "Auto110" drawing program.  AutoCAD's heritage can be traced to the HP 110 and HP 110-II which were based on the HP 713 program that was used to build the original AutoCAD.
In the 1980s, AutoCAD was a major product for DEC and its successor, Compaq.  In 1989, CAD Applications Inc (later Autodesk) purchased the rights to the AutoCAD product line. In addition, PTC bought out the assets of Ashton-Tate, which included the codebase for AutoCAD.
