Design elements

Building design has an impact of human performance and well being. These changes help increase self-regulation, collaboration, autonomy, motivation and physical well being. (Kariippanon, et al., 2018).

A classroom should have a broad range of design features and areas of the classroom.
Eliminate the teacher's desk in the front of the room. It is often considered a 'no-go zone' by many students and giving the teacher a central figure.
Place desks - or area where students sit - so teacher can make eye contact with each student
Flexible configuration for furniture so teachers and students can make changes depending on classroom activities. This helps facilitate personalized learning. (Kariippanon, et al., 2018).
Consider taking down classroom walls to create open space
Use of larger tables as alternative to individual desks can enable discussions and group work. At a table students will look at each other instead of all looking at the front of the room.
Round tables scattered throughout the classroom encourage engagement
Large group discussions can be facilitated by U-shaped layout
Designate spaces for large- and small-group activities
Set up your room and end of each month (or unit) evaluate and make changes
