" The Raven"
Edgar Allen Poe (July 19, 1809 – October 7, 1849) was an American author and editor. Though he achieved only modest critical and commercial success during his lifetime, his reputation as a major poet, short story writer, essayist, and literary critic grew considerably in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His most famous work, "The Raven", is usually considered to be his only significant contribution to poetry.
His poetry is characterized by the subjective vision of a lonely soul overwhelmed by morbid fear. According to critic Edmund Wilson, Poe is "the most important writer in the English language in the 19th century", and for the following century his critical reputation continued to increase. Poe's reputation was enhanced by the many imitators he inspired.The less critical approach of his later life has led to a tendency to view his works as bizarre and perverse. Some critics and fans, however, find them absorbing and creative.
Life
Poe was born on July 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts, to Allan, a printer, and Maria. His parents were both natives of Scotland. As a child, Poe was taught at home by a female friend of his mother's, Helen Royster Gregory (1790–1880), a teacher who remained his friend until her death. His mother died in 1816, and Poe was subsequently sent to live with his aunt, Mrs. Elizabeth Arnett Poe, in Richmond, Virginia, while his father remained in Boston. The boy spent much time with his aunt, who was a devout Catholic and a major influence on his life. He attended St. Mary's School in Richmond and enrolled at the University of Virginia in 1826.
During his time at the University of Virginia, Poe began writing at an early age. Although he had initially planned to be a lawyer, he dropped out of college after two years, without completing his degree. Poe lived at home, and his condition was diagnosed as a mental illness, or a form of "melancholy", in 1829. He started work as a journalist for the Southern Literary Messenger in 1829, contributing poetry, short stories, and critiques.
In 1831, Poe's sister-in-law, Virginia, was committed to an asylum for "dementia" and "maniacal tendencies". Her incarceration resulted in Poe's own breakdown, and he was confined to an insane asylum for two weeks. He was discharged
