A graphics tablet is a small flat surface on which pressure is applied, typically using a stylus or finger, to control the display of a computer program. Most tablets emulate a drawing surface in software by detecting the position of the stylus and plotting points on the screen.
At the same time, since the tablet is flat, it is held securely in front of the screen (typically of a laptop computer) and is large enough to contain as many details as needed to recreate a complex drawing. So while a tablet may be able to display a simple line or curve, the artist’s ability to work with a tablet far exceeds that of a mouse.
The tablet can be used for both 2D and 3D drawing and often comes with drawing software that is more sophisticated than that provided by a mouse. Some tablets (e.g., those from Wacom) come with a computer mouse and produce a perfect copy of the artist’s hand. In most other cases, an inexpensive third-party mouse will produce a more accurate drawing.
The term tablet may also refer to a flat surface on which a drawing is made, typically by means of a special pencil. When the surface is finished, it is mounted on a light box or frame for display to the artist.

APIs can be used to manipulate or automate various functions in the application, in an easy way, without the need for manual setup. In this article, we are going to focus on three AutoCAD's extensions called API, ObjectARX, and Macro Studio.
These extensions allow automation of task-oriented functions as well as customization of common drawing processes.
ObjectARX is a free AutoCAD add-on. It is used to write application-based extension to help Autodesk's AutoCAD extend its functionality. For example, if you are interested in a programmatic API for manipulating named objects, including objects in a drawing, ObjectARX can do it for you. There are more than 10 million registered users of ObjectARX.
Macro Studio is an add-on for AutoCAD which gives Autodesk users the ability to build, manage and automate macros and custom visual scripting. It allows the user to create, manage and run custom macros in AutoCAD.
Microsoft's AutoLISP is also an add-on for AutoCAD. AutoLISP, also known as Extended Visual LISP (EVLISP), is an extension to the Visual LISP programming language. It adds the capability to write stand-alone AutoCAD add-on programs (AutoLISP code) that can be installed and run in AutoCAD. AutoLISP is powerful language that can control and automate AutoCAD.
AutoCAD's API is a web service that connects AutoCAD to the web, allowing developers to develop and run AutoCAD add-ons (AutoLISP, VBA, or Visual LISP) in a web-based environment.
A typical use of API is to develop an add-on that generates a set of files that can then be distributed to other users who can invoke the add-on to generate the same set of files. AutoLISP can be used to run from the command line, from an external application or as a plugin within AutoCAD.
