10 Creepy and Cute Stunts in Master Chief Collection
Bioware is fully committed to making the Master Chief Collection as authentic as possible. It’s been a year in the making, with lots of behind the scenes details on how exactly we went about it. So, with the MCC officially released (and, by the way, you can find it right here), we wanted to show you just how much effort we put into recreating the Master Chief in MCC. The truth is, it didn’t happen overnight. Luckily, as we started to tackle each of the different cutscenes, we were able to fill in the gaps from different sources. When we discovered a missing cutscene, it became clear this was an opportunity to represent a brand new scene that we’d never seen before!
An Example
With the idea that we didn’t want to artificially create the cinematic events, we wanted to actually experience them. The island of Kamarong in Halo 2 is a perfect example of that.
In-Game Description
Some of the advanced soldiers accompanying your team are reporting strange activity in the downed enemy relay. When you arrive, you see a UAV that delivers a short briefing.
Behind the Scenes
When we get a chance to play one of the game’s lead animators, Andrew Robinson, we often ask to get some of his footwork cut out so we can play it ourselves. Even though we had access to this animation, we wanted to see just how Andrew performed it in-game. In this case, we noticed that there were a few hand positions that seemed too extreme for Master Chief. Luckily, Andrew had time in-between tasks to figure this out, and a few of those hand positions made their way into the game.
We also noticed that one cutscene had an odd, wall-in-the-grass look. This, of course, was quickly eliminated, and Andrew was able to give us a special hand for making that happen!
Getting our hands on different assets from the game was a real trial-and-error process. We had to flip through a ton of levels to get everything just right. Some people might think that that would be simple, but every asset was in a different location, and required a ton of work to figure out where it was located.
