History
AutoCAD was developed by Fisheye Software in San Rafael, California and was released on December 8, 1982. It was initially designed for Apple Computer's Macintosh personal computer and was originally titled "Displayboard" to emphasize the vertical orientation of the objects in the drawing area.
It was one of the first CAD applications to be written for a personal computer. It was also among the first to use the concept of an "object space", which allowed CAD objects to be "floating" in the drawing space and could move freely in the drawing area, and "viewing mode", which enabled two-dimensional views to be rotated, scaled, or moved about within the drawing area. Other features included an object library containing a database of various CAD objects, an improved graphics system and user interface, a "stepping" feature that allowed objects and labels to be moved from one position to another, and a snap-to-grid feature.
The original release of AutoCAD was a desktop application and used the Apple Macintosh operating system's built-in multi-window editing environment.
