A house in Westfield, New Jersey is known to have been harassed by a man who sent threatening letters to its residents signed The Watcher. As they remodeled the house, the Keeper began to torture them, claiming in his anonymous letters that the house had belonged to his family for decades and that he had been tasked with guarding it and awaiting his second coming. The house has not been sold since, according to Zillow, and its current value is estimated at around $1.5 million. Public records available on Zillow also show that the Broaddus family made several attempts to sell or rent the house after moving. Believing they had finally reached the pinnacle of their quiet country life, the Broaddus clan locked themselves in their expensive new home at 657 Boulevard, only to start receiving intrusive letters from a stalker known as the Watcher. Murphys series takes an interesting take on the source material. While the general details of the story are essentially correct, many of the prominent supporting characters were created out of thin air (like Jennifer Coolidges character Karen) or very loosely based on real people mentioned in Wiedemanns article (such as the eccentric Richard Kind). and Neighbors as Margot Martindales supporting characters). Murphy and his creative team also exaggerated the importance of a particularly violent crime to make it more central to their story.
