History
The precursor to AutoCAD was released in 1971 as CH-3. CH-3 was originally developed for engineers at Hentschel & Company, a California engineering design firm.
In 1976, Hentschel-developed software was acquired by the company that developed the first Mac, Apple. In 1978, Apple and Hentschel merged to form a new company called Apple Computer, Inc. Apple was a very different company than Hentschel had been, so it was decided to reposition Hentschel's engineering work, and convert it to run on Apple's new computer.
After the merger, Hentschel was repositioned as a production company, and the engineering division was renamed Hentschel Graphics Systems (HGS). This division was responsible for developing and marketing the CH-3 and later CH-R series of engineering software products. In 1979, Apple Computer, Inc. decided to purchase HGS, renaming the company Apple Computer, Inc. The engineering division was renamed HGS (Hentschel Graphics Systems), which ultimately developed the AutoCAD system for Apple.
HGS was originally located in Emeryville, California, which was also the home of Pixar and later Disney Animation Studios. In 1990, HGS was bought by Avid Technology, which was the parent company of Pixar Animation Studios.
Avid later merged with the German software development company Chaos Computer Club, and the HGS engineering division was renamed Autodesk.
Development
Autodesk began its development of a CAD system in 1975 by combining two related products. The first was the original CH-3, which was originally marketed as "AutoForm" for engineers at Hentschel, and the second was the CAD division of HGS.
The CH-3 provided 2D drafting, 2D layout, and 2D technical drawing functions, and the CAD division of HGS was responsible for the automation and integration of the CH-3 design workflows into a comprehensive, multipurpose CAD system. These combined efforts became the basis for the first AutoCAD product.
