AutoCAD (and AutoCAD LT) has been a major part of AutoCAD since the early 1980s, when the first version of AutoCAD was introduced. There were many different CAD software applications before the first release of AutoCAD. The AutoCAD product was initially developed for use by the United States Navy to produce ship plans. That program was renamed AutoCAD PLATO. When the PLATO product was transferred to the Air Force, the name was changed to AutoCAD.
In 1977 the first version of AutoCAD was released on a DEC PDP-11 minicomputer. From there it migrated to a range of mainframes and eventually to PCs. In the 1980s, the first graphical interface for AutoCAD was developed and introduced by AUTODESK.
AutoCAD's success in the marketplace began in the early 1980s and continued until the late 1980s when others took over the market share. Many different CAD software applications were developed during the 1980s.
