Using the Brush to Draw
In Figure 6-1, I painted the bottom area of an image using the Brush tool. The top image in the figure shows the Brush tool in the state of initial press. I started the painting process by selecting the Brush tool and using a soft-tip brush with a large opacity and low flow. I let the brush do its work slowly and carefully.

Drawing with the Brush tool is fun because the tool is so powerful and flexible. You can use the Brush tool to
  * Draw lines, shapes, and text
  * Fill areas with colors, gradients, and patterns
  * Create a grid or a marquee
  * Paint with any number of features, such as the Pen tool
  * Control other tools
  * Create a final copy of an image
You also can add layers to your layers using the Brush tool. For example, I painted in the lower-left corner of the image in Figure 6-1 without even noticing that I was creating a layer!
At any time during your painting, you can see the painted area on the canvas by pressing Ctrl+Y (Windows) or  +Z (Mac) to toggle the display of the Layer panel.
If you change the Shape Dynamics setting in the Options bar, you can choose between drawing with the Brush tool in the normal (default) "Forward +

Adobe Elements is the product that introduced features like layers. Photoshop has layers, paths and vectors, as well as a powerful selection and fill tools. If you’re new to Photoshop and elements, you need to know the basics before you can do anything with it.
