A week before AutoCAD was released, Ken Silverman, Autodesk’s principal software architect, wrote a paper called “The CAD Graphical User Interface Revolution”. Ken was a co-founder of the Computer Graphics Metafile (CGM) standard and was a member of the original AutoCAD development team. He was also in the army artillery signal intelligence (SIGINT) section. The SIGINT section was working on a military computer application named FOXPEN.
Ken mentioned a few other things as well in his paper. One interesting fact was that when he got to the section he had worked in, the FOXPEN team was working on an application with a similar graphical interface to AutoCAD. It was called PACT. PACT was a prototype of Autodesk’s AutoCAD.

The problem with PACT is that it didn’t work on Windows XP which is the operating system on most PCs in the time Ken Silverman was writing his paper.
The same day that Ken wrote his paper, Autodesk released AutoCAD 1.0 in December 1982. One feature of AutoCAD is the ability to create projects. Projects are collections of drawings and other files that are linked together.

AutoCAD and HTML/XML 
AutoCAD and XML (Extensible Markup Language) provide a method for interfacing between the two programs. They can communicate and share information between applications.
