In 1995, AutoCAD introduced the ability to save a file in Autodesk Exchange Format (DXF), which is commonly used in manufacturing to exchange data between different CAD systems. The DXF format supports the various drawing entities, or layers, which are used in design. It also supports a variety of geometric formats, such as rectangles, polylines, arcs, curves, splines, text, dimensions, and more. However, a DXF file can contain defects such as overlapping entities, holes, incorrect layers, etc., which can cause problems if it is used as input for another application. Due to the prevalence of errors in DXF files and a lack of tools to check them, some manufacturers started using several layers and inserting layers inside layers, in order to protect parts from errors. This practice can be applied when objects are imported from other programs, as well as when the CAD model is exported from another program, and when importing and exporting. These practices increase file size and make the exchange files more difficult to read.
Error checking for DXF files is a critical and controversial topic.
