The level of oil and gas production from shale formations is increasing. Hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking”, is a technology used to release gas or oil from shale formations. It is estimated that there are about 14 billion barrels of technically recoverable shale oil in the United States. This is an estimate, and it is unclear whether or not the total recoverable shale oil in the United States is economically feasible. However, the potential for shale oil is likely to increase in the future as oil prices increase and the potential for alternative energy becomes more apparent.
The primary oil shale formations in the United States are the Green River Formation of Wyoming, the Brushy Creek Formation of Colorado, and the Piceance Creek Formation of Colorado. These formations are not as extensive as the oil shale formations in other countries such as China, and their oil shale contents are not as high as those found in China. The formation that has the highest potential for technically recoverable shale oil is the Piceance Creek Formation.
The water usage in mining oil shale is significant, and water is a primary concern in shale oil production. Water usage in the mining of oil shale is particularly problematic because of the high water content of oil shale formations. For example, water is required to transport the oil shale from where it is mined to the processing plants, and water is required to process the oil shale to extract the hydrocarbon. Water is also used in primary extraction of the oil shale itself and secondary extraction of the oil from the extracted oil shale.
Oil shale formations often contain non-hydrocarbon compounds, which are not easily extracted from the oil shale. For example, shale oil production often leaves minerals such as clays, silica, and salts that are not soluble in the hydrocarbon fraction, or “kerogen”, of the oil shale.
It would be desirable to be able to process oil shale to remove non-hydrocarbon compounds and to make the remaining hydrocarbon fraction more amenable to processing in conventional hydrocarbon processing plants.Blindness (Tourettes song)
