AutoCAD: Brief introduction
AutoCAD is a commercial computer-aided design and drafting software application. Developed and marketed by Autodesk, AutoCAD was first released in December 1982 as a desktop app running on microcomputers with internal graphics controllers. Before AutoCAD was introduced, most commercial CAD programs ran on mainframe computers or minicomputers, with each CAD operator (user) working at a separate graphics terminal. AutoCAD is also available as mobile and web apps.

AutoCAD is a CAD program that helps its users plan and draw and transform objects. The icons on the right side of the screen are for several graphical functions that are used while drafting. You may access them by clicking on the tools menu or by using the drawing panel which appears when the workspace area is selected.

On 1 April 2007, the AutoCAD project was split into two separate projects: the core software product, AutoCAD, and the BIM Modeler product, Autodesk Design Review (formerly known as "DraftSight"). Routing
Axonometric drawings and sections, as well as orthographic projections and maps can be created as "slices" of the desired drawing. Any of these can then be rotated, scaled, moved or offset. Slices are stored separately in a "slice file" and arranged into a "sliced drawing".
Rotating and manipulating slices is done through the "Routing" tool. In the drawing window, an object appears in 3D space. In AutoCAD, one of the most common objects used to control routing is the "wireframe" (or "solid") object. In AutoCAD LT, these are replaced by the "wireframe" (or "surface") object. The wireframe is created by double-clicking on the "plane" (top of the viewing window) or by choosing the View -> Wireframe menu command. The default wireframe is a solid object with a blue fill. Wireframes can be double-clicked to enable the 3D cursor, which allows users to drag the wireframe in 3D space. The object can also be edited via the Standard toolbar's Edit menu.
