The UK Ministry of Defence (MOD), in collaboration with the United Nations University, conducted the study to determine the impact of the nuclear accident on the health, ecology and economy of the region. The research found that the direct impact of the nuclear accident is so severe that it has had, and will continue to have, long-term adverse effects on the surrounding communities. The study concluded that close to 4,000 people have been killed, and that a considerable number of these deaths could have been avoided.
The direct impacts that the study found included:
Up to 40,000 additional cancers of one kind or another.
Up to 4,000 deaths from a direct impact of radiation.
Prolonged growth retardation in young children.
Deterioration of the quality of the environment, including increased air and water pollution.
Mortality rates at least 20% higher than would normally be expected.
Morbidity rates in the region as a whole at least 50% higher than would normally be expected.
