History
In 1982, Ivan Sutherland's Sketchpad and Raymond E. Fikes' SuperSketch were the two pioneering CAD programs. Sketchpad had a reputation for complexity, but it was limited to 2D shapes and did not support animation. SuperSketch was capable of supporting 2D and 3D models, animation, and most importantly, it had the ability to interface with more traditional drafting tools, so that it could act as a more complete CAD application for the time.
In 1982, Gary Kildall announced the Warp system, an advanced vector-graphics package for the Macintosh, for US$12,000, and the user community was so enthusiastic that by the end of 1983, less than a year after the announcement, Kildall was making more money from the Macintosh platform than he did from his existing software business. This convinced him to create a free version of the program for his existing customers.
