VISUAL ELEMENTS
COLOUR  
The colour palette sticks to the primaries with a mix on monochromatic tones. He paints the beer mug in vivid red with a blue bottom, and places it in the centre of the painting to communicate its importance that it is the main focal point to the painting. This vivid red and blue of the mug, and yellow of the table contrasts to the background and the other objects on the table, as he uses black and white. ​
The red and yellow are hot colours also which again help to lead the viewers eye directly to them.​
TONE
Much of Legers painting is flat with little tone or form, except from the table legs, the plates on the table and the bright blue curtain at the right hand side of the painting. We can see the tone as he create shadows in these areas compared to the flat black and white patterned floor. This contrast of flat objects and 3D objects connects to his abstract style. ​
The flat geometry of the kitchen is interrupted by a dark blue curtain, which, like the beer mug and its surrounding objects, is rendered in a slightly more naturalistic style due to the employment of light and shade.
