Roblox is an online game platform and game creation system developed by Roblox Corporation that allows users to program games and play games created by other users. Created by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel in 2004 and released in 2006, the platform hosts user-created games of multiple genres coded in the programming language Lua. For most of Roblox's history, it was relatively small, both as a platform and a company. Roblox began to grow rapidly in the second half of the 2010s, and this growth has been accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Roblox is free to play, with in-game purchases available through a virtual currency called Robux. As of August 2020, Roblox had over 164 million monthly active users, including more than half of all American children under 16. Roblox was founded in early 2004 by Erik Cassel and David Baszucki, who met at the Brown School in Providence, Rhode Island. Together, the two developed their first game—a clone of the award-winning tower defense game, Warcraft 3—and they self-funded the project.
Cassel and Baszucki received help from their college roommate Andrew Salo, who helped them through their initial design and programming. Their first game, an HTML5 browser-based platform called "Wurm" ("worm" in Polish), was released in December 2004. Its direct ancestor was a project called "Fibbage", which Cassel and Baszucki also wrote while in college. This is notable since Fibbage was developed in order to learn PHP, a programming language, which they would later use to develop their first commercial game.
Wurm had 10 players. Cassel and Baszucki had not learned PHP at the time, so they used a dummy's fake email address for the game's contact email. In Spring 2005, the pair released a sequel to Wurm, "Wurm2", and they added features such as support for multiple languages. In August 2005, the pair founded "Roblox" as a "gaming community" that hosted both games for players and games for creators.
The first Roblox game to be coded in the then-nascent scripting language Lua was "Lunar Lander",
