ReviewMetaScore Romeros Interesting Failure Despite being directed by George Romero and billed as a horror movie, Season of the Witch (aka Jacks Wife, I think is a more appropriate title) isnt really a horror movie. at least its not *simple* horror, and anyone expecting Romeros signature gore and suspense will definitely be disappointed. The closest the film comes to typical horror comes in some surprisingly horrifying sequences in which a man wearing a grotesque satanic rubber mask (exploitatively depicted on some of the films old videotapes) attempts to break into the protagonists home. The film is about the story of a woman who is dissatisfied with the daily difficulties of her existence as a decent wife in a decent suburb. He feels like hes getting old. She is secretly bitter towards her husband and friends. Its never entirely clear what exactly she wants, as she doesnt seem to know herself, but shes intrigued by a woman next door who claims to be a witch. She meets this woman and, despite her fear of black magic, inspires her to explore it on her own. He goes and buys a book on the subject and some magical supplies, and then starts doing magic in his kitchen. Despite the bloodless plot, there are several moments in this film that bear the unmistakable stamp of Romero and his influence.
