In March 2008, the developers completed the first version of the game, titled Bigworld. The company's first version of Roblox did not have graphics, and the developers spent much time creating code for the game. It included a map editor and a user interface. The company redesigned the game in 2009, removing Bigworld and adding a video game editor, building environments, and adding new objects to the game.
In June 2009, the company announced that Roblox had secured $1 million in funding from Playground Global and ZhenFund, two online investment management companies. It was also planning to host a beta test of the game.
