General manager Brian Gutekunst wasnt made available to the media, leaving head coach Matt LaFleur to answer for the teams lack of involvement on Wednesday.Ill be honest, when Im up there, its what are we doing to put our team in the best position possible to go gameplan and put our guys in a spot to go execute and go beat a team that we know is going to give us everything they can, LaFleur said.As the head coach, it is not LaFleurs responsibility to sign and trade players. His focus is to work with what he has to prepare for the next opponent. Of course, its tough to blame the media for pressing LaFleur on the teams failure to strike a deal before the deadline, especially when LaFleur is in direct contact with the general manager. But those discussions didnt even take place, according to LaFleur.We didnt even get into that, he said. Our focus was on Detroit.So, the only one who has answers for what transpired on Tuesday wont be heard from until the end of the season. That is when Gutekunst will hold his final press conference before heading into the offseason, which will most likely be sooner rather than later unless the Packers can turn around their disappointing season.Obviously, coaching and player performance has played a role in Green Bays recent downfall, but the general manager could have done something to spark a team in need of juice.The Packers were reportedly close to trading for Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Chase Claypool before the Chicago Bears swooped in and nabbed him for a second-round pick. But outside of Claypool, Green Bay wasnt in the mix for anyone else, meaning a second-year receiver is the only one who maybe could have helped this 3-5 roster.For now, Gutekunst will remain in the shadows while other general managers around the league are willing to talk about the moves they made. On Wednesday, Buffalo Bills GM Brandon Beane said the team had inquired about running back Christian McCaffrey before he was traded to San Francisco. Even though the Bills missed on their first choice, they still added a talented running back in Nyheim Hines to their 6-1 roster.Meanwhile, the Packers are in the midst of a four-game losing streak after falling to a Bills team that is still getting better. Gutekunst will have to provide answers eventually, but it is unfair to have LaFleur take the punches in the meantime. Now, theyre going to have to move forward with what they have, and surprisingly, Aaron Rodgers actually seems OK with that. During his weekly press conference on Wednesday, Aaron Rodgers was asked about the lack of moves by his team and although hes never been shy about questioning the front office, the Packers quarterback made it clear that he understood why general manager Brian Gutekunst wasnt able to pull the trigger on any deals. The compensation for whatever players we were going after just didnt make sense, Rodgers said, via USA Today. So I trust Brian, and we had some good conversations. We were in on some things. It just didnt pan out.The closest Rodgers came to being passive-aggressive came when he was asked if a trade needed to be made. Thats not my area of focus, Rodgers said. Brian didnt think whatever was out there was worth whatever was required of what was given up. That just sends a message to us that weve got to play with the guys weve got and win with the guys weve got.Heading into Week 9, the Packers are averaging just 18.1 points per game, which is the seventh-lowest number in the NFL. The team also ranks in the bottom half of the league with just 217.4 passing yards per game. Although the Packers didnt pull off a trade, the two teams at the top of the NFC did with the Vikings and Eagles both scoring big before the deadline. The Vikings acquired T.J. Hockenson while the Eagles added Robert Quinn. Well, with all due respect to those teams, were chasing some other teams right now, Rodgers said, via PFT. Weve got to get back in the hunt. Those teams are out front right now. So Im worried about our guys that weve got in the locker room. . . . Like I said, I know we were in on some guys, and liked a few. But it just didnt work out.One of the guys that Green Bay was apparently in on was Chase Claypool. According to the Green Bay Post-Gazette, the Packers offered a second-round pick for Claypool, but the Steelers decided to send him to Chicago after the Bears also offered a second-rounder. With no new players on the roster, Rodgers knows the team will now have to win with who they have. That just sent the message to us that weve got to play with the guys weve got and win with the guys weve got, Rodgers said Wednesday. I think theres still a lot of confidence in the guys in the locker room. I do feel like we need to get healthy.Getting healthy seems like a must for the Packers if theyre going to compete for a playoff spot. One reason a trade would have made sense for Green Bay is because the team is banged up at receiver right now with Christian Watson, Allen Lazard, Sammy Watkins and Randall Cobb all dealing with injuries over the past few weeks. If the team can get healthy, Rodgers seems confident that they can be good. . Weve got to hopefully get Watson and Lazard back this week, Cobby in a couple more weeks, Rodgers said, via ESPN.com. Were hopeful that both guard Elgton Jenkins and left tackle David Bakhtiari will be able to go, and theres no surprises on game day. I think that squad, when you put that together, I think we can win some football games with those guys. Winning football games is something that Packers are going to need to start doing soon. At 3-5, Green Bay doesnt have much margin for error over the second half of the season. The Packers will try to turn things around starting on Sunday when they travel to Detroit in a game they really need to win, because after that, they play three straight games against teams that currently have five or more wins (Dallas, Tennessee, at Philadelphia).
