This tutorial is the seventh in our series of tutorials on using Photoshop CS6.
Step 1: Opening an Image
As Photoshop is a full-fledged editing program with many features, it can be overwhelming for new users. To get the most out of this tutorial, we recommend starting with a photo or image that's only one or two layers deep. You can make multiple layers for more complex projects.
To open a single-layer file in Photoshop, choose File > Open > Image, or the small green arrow icon to the right of the Open button. The Image button opens a dialog box with the options shown in Figure 1.

You can choose between the following options:
Images: Opens your image directly, either from your computer or from a digital camera.
JPEG (JPG or Jpeg): Opens a standard file from your computer that is compatible with most other photo editing software and web images.
PNG: Opens a lossless, high-quality image, which is ideal for use as a print file. You can make your own PNG files or you can use software such as Photoshop to make them.
TIFF: Opens a high-quality image suitable for a print file or for use on the Web.

Open your image by clicking the Open button, or you can use one of the other options listed above. The Document icon in Figure 2 shows you what is on screen.

Right-click any empty space to add a new layer, which is a container for the image. If your image already has one or more layers, you can also create new layers by choosing Layer > New > Layer. In the Layers panel (Figure 3), a new, transparent layer appears above the previous layers.

To create a new layer for a specific area of your image, click and drag on the relevant area. You can also create a layer by moving the selection or the layer's thumbnail into view.
Now you can add other layers to your image, as the settings in the Layers panel, as well as other settings for your document, determine how you can edit and organize your image.

Installing Photoshop Elements
Follow these steps to install Photoshop Elements 2018 or Photoshop Elements 2019:
Download the latest version of Photoshop Elements from the main Adobe website. Install the program from the CD, DVD or USB drive. Click the install button, wait for the installation to complete and then follow the onscreen prompts to complete the installation. You can also download the offline installer from the same Adobe website.
Note:
If you don't have Adobe Flash installed, try installing Adobe Flash from the main Adobe website.
If you don't have Microsoft Silverlight installed, try installing Microsoft Silverlight from the main Adobe website.
If you're having trouble installing Photoshop Elements from a DVD disc, try downloading the installer file from the Adobe website and then installing it from the USB or CD.
Creating a Portable Edition of Photoshop Elements
If you're planning to use Photoshop Elements on a portable computer and don't have the program already installed, you can create a portable version using the file PortableApps.com. Download the.pkg file of the program you want to install to a portable drive. Follow the instructions included in the file.
Upgrading from the Web to an Offline Installer Version
If you upgraded from an older version of Photoshop Elements to a newer version, you may find that the upgrade doesn't work because you don't have the update files for the programs on your computer.
You can upgrade from the web version to the offline installer version of Photoshop Elements by downloading the following:
