This work should be considered as a reference for industrial and mechanical engineers and should be used for undergraduate and graduate course work in heat transfer. The book does not assume previous knowledge of the subject and is extremely simple in presentation. It is divided into four parts: General Formulation of Heat Transfer, Basic Heat Transfer Problems in Solid Materials, The Mathematical Treatment of Steady-State Problems in Heat Transfer, and Steady-State Problems in Transient Heat Transfer. Each section is then subdivided into four chapters. Chapter 2. General Formulation of Heat Transfer. Two general equations, which will be discussed in later chapters, are developed. They are called the General Heat Equation and the General Mass Balance Equation. They give the mathematical relations of energy and matter in terms of the temperatures of the system and its partial variables. Chapter 3. Basic Heat Transfer Problems in Solid Materials. The General Heat Equation and the General Mass Balance Equation are used to discuss several basic heat transfer problems in solids. Chapter 4. The Mathematical Treatment of Steady-State Problems in Heat Transfer. General Heat Equation and the General Mass Balance Equation are used to consider the steady-state problems, based on their general mathematical form. In this section, the mathematical technique of solution of heat transfer problems is reviewed. Chapter 5. Steady-State Problems in Transient Heat Transfer. General Heat Equation and the General Mass Balance Equation are used to consider the transient-state problems. When the initial conditions are not known, the Initial and Boundary Value Problems are discussed. In the general mathematical form for the differential equation used to represent the problem, the initial conditions are defined, and the boundary conditions are specified. Chapter 6. Exercises. A series of problems is included which should be solved by the student. A typical problem in Chapter 6 is referred to in the text throughout the entire book. The problems range in difficulty from easy to very difficult. Except in the introductory chapters, the solutions are not included and should be found on a problem-by-problem basis.
