AutoCAD was originally based on the MITS Altair, which was released in October 1981. In February 1982, Autodesk released the first version of AutoCAD as a microcomputer application, called Automated Drafting System (ADS). Since then, Autodesk has added many enhancements to AutoCAD, as well as cross-platform functionality.
AutoCAD has the following capabilities:
2D drafting and design of 2D objects, such as 2D drawings
2D and 3D visualization and presentation of 2D and 3D objects
Data management, including database and file management
Data exchange with external applications, such as CAD systems and spreadsheet software
All these features, in addition to solid modeling, part design, and other unique capabilities, make AutoCAD a very powerful and cost-effective CAD application.
AutoCAD and cross-platform
AutoCAD was originally developed on the M-10 minicomputer running the Univac 1108 operating system. AutoCAD version 1.0 was released in September 1983. It ran on a microcomputer that included an internal graphics controller, and it supported 16- and 24-bit graphics modes.

Autodesk developed AutoCAD for its own use, but it decided to release the software as shareware. After 3 months of this, Autodesk decided that it was too expensive to produce the software. So they turned it into a commercial product, and it was first sold in May 1985. Autodesk is owned by F+W Media (formerly known as Future plc), and it has been published by Autodesk since the year 2000.
The first version of AutoCAD for the IBM PC (PC DOS) followed in September 1985. That version of AutoCAD was called Autodesk AutoCAD LT. AutoCAD LT also ran on the Apple II, Commodore 64, and the original Macintosh. Later, cross-platform capabilities were added to AutoCAD, including the ability to run on Mac OS, Linux, and other operating systems.

AutoCAD Classic
Autodesk launched AutoCAD Classic in 1986. It became a stand-alone product in 1995, and was the main AutoCAD product until 2004. During this period, the development process was relatively open, and there was a large amount of innovation in the core engine. This is the version that remained stable during the long product life.
Autodesk Classic was released in 3 editions:
 AutoCAD 2005 (v10), the first major product revision since the release of AutoCAD Classic in 1995. The product added a new interface, introduced a significant change to the working environment, and received an improved user interface. The features incorporated in 2005 were:
