I'm building an interpreter in OCaml (for fun) and I'm having trouble dealing with non-exhaustive patterns.
For example, suppose I have an object that provides the following fields:
object A = {
    name = "Pizza";
    add = (+);
};
And now, suppose I have the following function:
let add a b =
match a with
|:= _ -> b
|::[] -> raise (Failure "add error")
|(_::[_])::c -> c
Note the last line: a function that expects a tuple containing any, but for now, we'll just pretend that there are no more than two fields. Now, suppose I create a variable that looks like:
let a = A { name = "stuff"; _ };;
Now, here's where it gets weird: when I call add a b, it happily runs through the code and completes its execution:
let add a b =
match a with
|:= _ -> b
|::[] -> raise (Failure "add error")
|(_::[_])::c -> c
But here's the problem: even though a matches against the tuple _::[], we don't ever match the second item in the tuple, and thus, we fail to exit the function without calling the second clause. So, when
