@JamesMaynetworth313James May was born in Bristol. In addition to him, there were three other children in the family: an older sister Jane, a younger Sarah, and a brother. During his childhood, his family moved around the country frequently. He first attended Caerleon Primary School near Newport in south Wales. His teenage years were spent in South Yorkshire, where he attended Oakwood Comprehensive School in Rotherham, coincidentally the same town where Jeremy Clarkson began his career as a journalist. He also went to school with Dean Andrews, star of Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes. As a child he was a choirboy at Whiston Parish School. A fine flautist and pianist, he later studied music at Lancaster University, where he was a member of Pendle College. Journalistic career May worked as an assistant editor at The Engineer in the early 1980s, later at Autocar magazine. He wrote for several publications, including a regular column in CAR magazine called England Made Me, articles for Top Gear magazine, and a weekly column in The Daily Telegraph. In 2000 he won the Car Journalist of the Year award. He wrote the book May on Cars, which is a collection of his articles, and co-authored The Great Wine Adventure of Oz and James, based on the television series of the same name. May also wrote the afterword to the latest book from L. J. K. Setwright's The Long Road with Curves, published in September 2006. In the same month he presented a dedication to Raymond Baxter. His book, Sideways Notes, was published on 26 April 2007. On 6 September 2007 his book The 20th Century of James May, dedicated to the TV series of the same name, was published. In August 2006 it was revealed that May had collaborated with the online car humour magazine Sniff Petrol.
