But the events leading up to the race make it even more memorable. NASCAR drivers have faced a number of challenges this season. As a result, they met and formed the so-called Association of Professional Drivers, known as PDA. Race car safety, paychecks and long weekly schedules were just some of the topics of discussion in 1969. The PDA was officially incorporated in August 1969 when Richard Petty was named its president. Concerns about competitors began to grow in late spring. Before the Talladega race, a dozen drivers walked out to protest the prize money. Meetings were held prior to the Southern 500 at Darlington Speedway on September 1 to register more drivers for the PDA. Training began at Talladega on Tuesday, September 9, 1969, with qualifying scheduled for the next day. The racing surface on the 2.66-mile track immediately proved too uneven. Tire manufacturers Goodyear and Firestones have gone to great lengths to develop tires capable of handling up to 190mph engine speeds. Lap after lap the tires just didnt stick together. The uneven track surface tore them to pieces, especially the right front end due to downforce when cornering. David Pearson, driver of the #17 Ford Holman-Moody, won his third NASCAR championship of the season. When asked about the condition of the track that weekend, he replied, Its a trio, according to the January 1993 issue of American Racing Classics. If we had a surface as smooth as MIS (Michigan International Speedway), we could stand on it all around. If its different (Walnut), I havent had time to find it. You spend all your time behind the wheel. Only nine cars were able to qualify on Wednesday before the race, and four more on Thursday with a speed difference of 40 mph from fastest to slowest. By Friday, 14 more cars have qualified, which makes a total of 27. This way, 36 cars will enter the field. 20 will not be cup cars. On the same Friday, both tire manufacturers brought in additional tire compounds for testing. Drivers Charlie Glotzbach and Donnie Ellison installed them on their cars and the laps were completed. Nevertheless, Their tires were no better than others and they blew just as easily. Tire directors were running out of options and had very little to offer. I was working for Firestone as a local representative at the time and I was right in the middle, said Humpy Wheeler.
