The game was first released in North America on the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 on October 30, 2008. The Xbox 360 version features an exclusive multiplayer mode, titled "X-Club", which is based on the X-Club system that was introduced in the Ubisoft's E3 2008 press conference. The PlayStation 3 version, however, lacks multiplayer support, since the PlayStation 3's firmware does not support such functions. It was followed by Assassin's Creed II, a year later.

Gameplay
Assassin's Creed is set in Renaissance Italy, and tasks players with using "stealth, martial prowess, and cunning to execute assassinations and confront an enemy in order to advance the plot of the game." The game introduces the free-running feature, which allows players to move freely around the environment. The player can climb upon objects and climb fences. This allows for Assassin to move seamlessly through the environment. The game also includes a storyline that focuses on the protagonist during a mission. The player is to assassinate enemies in order to gain favor with the Brotherhood. Along the way, the player has to confront and defeat assassins as well as other enemies. As the player progresses through the game, the protagonist gains abilities.  These skills improve the player's stealth. The skills are unlocked as the player completes various tasks in the game. The stealth mechanics are based on The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest. The game was one of the earliest for its use of Havok. The game supports two-player co-op and multiplayer. Co-op allows two players to work together to unlock puzzles and eliminate enemies. Multiplayer supports up to four players in two-player versus mode. Multiplayer modes include hide-and-seek, capture the flag, team death match, and king of the hill.  The modes are asynchronous, which means that players can choose when to play.
Plot
The story takes place during the Renaissance in Italy. The game begins with the protagonist, Ezio Auditore, receiving a letter from his mentor, Abstergo Industries, inviting him to become an Assassin. Ezio responds to this by stealing some vital documents that Abstergo is planning on using to take over the city of Rome. After Ezio completes the heist, he is hunted
