One of the most discussed issues in the 802.11 world for a few years now is the MD5 hash, used in the MAC address.
Basically, the hashes that should be used when communicating with wireless clients, are:
- Client id - often referred to as the MAC address
- Peer id - the MAC address of the AP
- Roaming id - the MAC address of the AP the client is currently associated with, and can be either the client id or the peer id. This is the most important information to ensure interoperability when roaming.
The problem with MD5 came a long time ago. Many experts believed it could be a strong password but it had some security vulnerabilities that put many computers and networks at risk for attack.
Computers with MD5 were vulnerable to a type of attack called a brute force attack, where you try all possible values within a certain range. For instance, if the value was a 32-bit number, there are 232 (= 4,294,967,296) different values for the MAC address that you can choose from. A brute force attack would try to test each value to see if it matches the
