Using Photoshop
We know you're thinking that much like Illustrator, Photoshop can be complex for a beginner. You're right. However, it's really not that bad, at least not when compared to programs like Corel's Paint Shop Pro, which is the tool of choice for beginning photographers and graphic artists. (This comparison is given later in the chapter.)
The program's interface is laid out with tabs at the top of the screen. The tabs are
• **File** to open or save files
• **Edit** to view and work with the various image editing tools
• **Windows** to work with layers and effects
• **View** to view and control how your image is displayed
Photoshop's interface is designed to keep you working directly in the editing screen. Figure 2-1 shows how the interface appears. The top bar includes the Photoshop splash screen, the "Photoshop CS5 User Guide" banner (which we discuss later in this chapter), and a button you can use to open a tutorial for a specific tool. There are also buttons for the more advanced image-editing features available in Photoshop, including masking (see Chapter 6) and color correction (see the sidebar "Knowing what color-correction tools are available," later in this chapter).

To begin, click the File tab and then click Open (Windows) or Load (Mac). You see the Photoshop splash screen, which gives you a quick overview of the program. You can use the mouse to select any part of the screen, but in reality, you're doing that a lot less often than you should be. The following sections give you the lowdown on working with this program.

In this article we will show you how you can create a Photoshop-like image effect in Photoshop Elements. Today we are going to use the “soft light” effect for our effect and to do so, we are going to use Photoshop Elements’s built-in plug-ins.

This is what our background looks like on its own. The main image used in this tutorial is a stock photo from the Blur Tool Image library.
Step #1. Create a new Photoshop-like Background
Open the background and drag it into Photoshop Elements.
Set the “Create a clipping mask” option. This will allow us to show the different layers together and to have a complete understanding of what each layer does.
Step #2. Add some other backgrounds
Add another two backgrounds.
Click on one of them and select “shapes” and then select “spiral”.
Follow the same process with the other background. You can see the different layers in this figure.
Step #3. Remove the shadows from our foreground
If we didn’t do that in the last tutorial, we are going to do it now.
We are going to use an adjustment layer and a darken filter to remove the shadows. Right-click on the layer and select “create adjustment layer”. In the dialogue box that appears, select “darken”.
Hit OK and you are good to go.
Step #4. Add more shadows
Add a grey shadow on the left side. Then add another one on the right side.
Step #5. Make the skies clearer
Add a light version of our image in the sky.
Step #6. Finish the background
In the last step, we are going to use a gradient on a layer above all the other layers in order to fade all the other layers in the background out of the picture.
Let’s go back to the layers in our PSD.
This is a new layer above all the other layers. Select it and press CTRL + click on “Layer 1” below it in order to select all the layers below.
Go to the “colors” tab and add a gradient above all the other layers. Let’s say it is a light blue with a blue
