The film is about a busy executive (Steve Buscemi) who is awoken from his peaceful slumber by his mischievous six-year-old son (Elijah Wood) who has returned home early. As the story begins, he is overwhelmed with the challenge of being a dad to a toddler, especially a son who has inherited his father's naughtiness.
Budget
DreamWorks Animation president Stacey Snider says, "We spend almost no money. We know that's not very common, but we also don't put much in. We are very controlled, we are very conscious of the things that we put in." Box office box office projections for the film come from box office analysis website Box Office Mojo.
Casting and casting controversy
The cast was announced in July 2016 with Steve Buscemi as the main character, voiced by veteran voice actor David Kaye. Snider said, "There's been a lot of interest in Steve as a father figure, and there's a real market out there for stories that have somebody who is not the family as the central character."
According to Box Office Mojo, the largest budget for a film in 2017 was for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, which had a budget of $78.5 million. Release
The film was released on August 10, 2017. It was initially scheduled to be released in 3D and IMAX 3D on August 3, 2017, but its release was pushed back to August 10, 2017, so the animated short, Big Hero 6: The Series, could be released the same day. As of February 5, 2019, the film has made $130 million.
Marketing
The first trailer was released online on March 21, 2017, and was met with positive response. As of September 2017, the film has received over 1.1 billion views on YouTube, and has been viewed on YouTube more than any other movie that was released in 2017.
