History
AutoCAD's early versions were based on the MIL-STD-1750 standard for automation, and CAD's requirements for accuracy, time, and effort. In 1989, AutoCAD was the first desktop CAD application to be given a formal date of release. The name AutoCAD is a contraction of AUTomated DRAWing Application. The first AutoCAD users were mapping designers who were using AutoCAD to create topographical maps. These users were satisfied with the result because it saved the time and effort spent manually drafting the contour lines. The "A" in AutoCAD stands for "Automatic." The "CAD" is short for "computer-aided design." The version number corresponds to the year of AutoCAD's release, indicating an annual upgrade. By 1990, AutoCAD had begun to find its way into all types of businesses. These include land surveying, architectural and engineering firms, construction companies, and medical and dental practices.

The XML Paper Specification (XPS) is a file format that has been accepted as an ISO standard. XPS can be produced in various sizes and bit depth levels, and contains raster images, vector graphics, or a combination of the two. XPS is used in 2D CAD for the production of printing quality and for file transfers to printing devices. It is increasingly used for printing high-quality color documents.
History
AutoCAD was created by Thomas H. Dickey and Joe Casadonte, starting in 1982, at a time when computer graphics were often specialized, expensive, and largely limited to construction projects. AutoCAD pioneered the use of graphics that could be modeled and displayed interactively on a computer. This led to the rise of CAD, a term coined by Dickey and Casadonte to describe the use of computerized graphics for the design of products.
The company was founded in 1982 and started in 1982 as a licensee of Autodesk, Inc., but gained full ownership of AutoCAD in 1994. In 1995, AutoCAD first became available for Macintosh computers. The AutoCAD format is generally considered to be an enhanced and updated version of AutoCAD LT, an earlier AutoCAD version developed by Micrografx (a company that AutoCAD was initially a license for) for the Apple II.
AutoCAD LT was originally aimed at the DOS world, but it did have a Windows version, which was a client/server application that ran on the Windows OS. Due to lack of support, the product had a short life span. The new AutoCAD introduced native support for Windows as well as Macintosh platforms. The Macintosh version was also a client/server product, although the client was developed in native Mac OS code. The AutoCAD Classic line is AutoCAD's version of AutoCAD LT, and it is an upgrade of the original AutoCAD version.
The version of AutoCAD that was available in 2002 was version 13, called "AutoCAD 2002". Version 12 was released in 1996, named "AutoCAD 96" for its Windows version.

AutoCAD 2004 was released in 2003, with a few different editions including the Standard and Professional versions.
