Mother Language Day

The 21st of February is marked annually as International Mother Language Day by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). The day is commemorated "to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism" according to UNESCO.  South Africa recognises 11 official languages, a reflection of the diversity of the Southern African nation.
