The Photoshop people would tell you that these resources are excellent for learning, and that they are great for beginners. However, the tools you are learning are best used for a _professional_ beginner. When you are ready to go from simply using a program to writing and creating your own digital images, then you will move into a higher level of Photoshop, and dive into the areas where the real professionals are.
# Creating a Graphic (Lesson 8)
Photoshop provides many features that allow you to create your own art—just create. Over the years, there have been many books on how to use Photoshop to create art. Although some are very good books, some have more of an old-school approach to teaching you how to apply a bunch of filters to create a great artistic piece. Others may be a bit too much like tutorials on a web page and move too quickly for a beginner.
After using some of the features, you will soon recognize that you need to step back and take a more observant approach to creating with Photoshop. This chapter teaches you how to follow the art route by simply working with Photoshop's tools and letting the graphics flow. Following this route will take some practice to get good at.
Photoshop has several layers that allow you to paint or create any image you can think of. In this chapter, you learn how to create a simple shape and then use different adjustments to adjust it as needed to create your own artwork.
## Getting a Shapes Tool
The first task is to bring up the Shapes tool (Figure 8-1). When creating an image, you should be focusing on the basic elements: color, shape, and form. Without the use of these basic elements, you are simply creating _art_ on a layer, not an image. When you are working with a shape tool, you can place shapes into a layer of your image that can be manipulated as needed (see Figure 8-2).

Step 1: Download Photoshop Elements
Log in to your trial account and download Photoshop Elements for Windows or Mac. You can get a free trial of Photoshop Elements with a free 30-day trial of the Creative Cloud desktop subscription.
The default image sizes available to you are 1280x720, 1280x800, 1600x900, 1600x1200, 2048x1536 and 2592x1944.
In this tutorial, I'll be using the first three image sizes. When you load a photo, you can resize it to the size you want before you start editing.
Step 2: Create a New File
Click the File menu and go to New. You can also use the "+" sign in the File menu. You can select your new image from your photo collection or click the Browse button and find a suitable image in your computer.
