The ODOMUSCULUS PEOPLE are known to pay their customarily loyal (and true-to-form) tribute to the world's most outrageous people, starting with, of course, ourselves.
We have some notables for you this time around: the Ukrainian "EURO-TUNER" and the Chinese "SPIDER-MAN". But, first we must offer our usual kudos to our two-man-band of Chief Editors, Erik and Bill.
In their "Blood in the Streets" book, they are presented as "the perfect example of what a pair of lunatics can accomplish if they have great taste in wine and women".
We like to think so. But, in a way, it is more fitting to speak of our own twisted but quite successful, rambunctious vinous escapades.
So, without further ado, here is the first of our two-part salute to the not-so-well-known but quite wonderful wines of our friends.
LUXONIKOS 2007- BRENDE, NV $99 (The Treasures of Greece)
What is Luxonikos? This is an ancient Greek wine that has been made in the region since at least the early 13th century. What is unique about this "Supernova" is that it is made from dried grapes (which have been in the sun for up to 3 years) that are crushed in a special mill and then stored in barrels (typically white oak) for some unknown number of years. This wine is made primarily from the Santorini grape variety known as Vidal Blanc. Its unique flavors are of lemon/lime, fruit, spice and an earthy character. It is sometimes described as a "splash of espresso". One of our friends describes it as tasting like a really good barrel-aged California Cab Franc. Let's take a look at a review that popped up on WineVine: "Santorini's own "Luxonikos" has an elemental, fruity character without the specific complexity of Burgundy. There are enough acid and tannin to give this wine an edge on the richness of other Greek varieties. Very well balanced, savory fruit, perfectly balanced acidity and a very smooth mouthfeel. Awesome
