Now that we’ve successfully installed Gimp on Ubuntu 12.04, we can start to use this power photo editing software. Let’s start a new open project to get a feel for what the software can do. So first let’s choose the size and resolution for our new image. For most of the following steps we’ll have a 16×9 image, but you can start by experimenting with different sizes to get a feel for the software. Then we’ll adjust the white balance of the image. This is where we can adjust the color cast on our image by using the brightness/contrast. We’ll be using a little bit of the saturation and the hue to darken the color to make our image darker. In the menu click on Hue and pick a color that you want to darken the image. A good example is to pick something like orange.
Once you’ve done that, click OK and wait until it’s done.
Now that our image is a darker orange, we’ll need to adjust the levels of the image. In this case, we’ll pick up the contrast and adjust the levels.
While you’re in the Levels dialog, you can adjust a ton of other things like color levels, curves, shadows, highlights, and contrast. Once you’re happy with your image, hit OK and your image should look like the image below.
Next, we’ll pick up the blur filter to create a more blurry image. With the blur filter selected, hold down the Ctrl key and click on the little arrow to move the blur filter. Click OK and the image should look like this.
Now that we have a nice blurry image, we’ll add a layer of color. Click on the paint bucket and pick a color for the new layer. While your color is selected, look around the image for some different colors and pick different ones. I’m going to pick a color that’s more like a burnt orange, so I�
