Salvage radiation therapy in recurrent advanced epithelial ovarian cancer: a Gynecologic Oncology Group report.
To describe the results of salvage radiation therapy in patients with recurrent advanced ovarian cancer. We performed a retrospective review of the records of all patients with recurrent advanced epithelial ovarian cancer from 11 cooperative group trials who received salvage radiation therapy for disease recurrence. Of the 489 patients with recurrent advanced ovarian cancer, 105 had received salvage radiation therapy as their first treatment for recurrence. The median age of the entire group was 58 years (range, 21 to 87 years); 84% of the patients were platinum-sensitive at the time of radiotherapy. The most common sites of recurrence were locoregional (56 patients) and distant (63 patients). The median survival from the start of salvage radiation therapy was 5.5 months. Fifty-four patients (51%) had a tumor response to salvage radiation therapy, including 30% complete response and 19% partial response, and 30% of the patients had stable disease. Treatment with salvage radiation therapy was not associated with improved survival. These findings support the fact that a significant proportion of patients with recurrent ovarian cancer treated with salvage radiation therapy experience a prolonged survival, even when salvage radiation therapy is not the first treatment for recurrence.fileFormatVersion: 2
