Laying down the basics: Layer basics
Before you can start editing photos, you need to know what makes a layer. And what a layer really is — it's a special invisible area that's used to hold the image's image data.
A layer is a collection of pixels that can be transformed, moved, and resized in virtually unlimited ways. Photoshop lets you cut and paste layers; move, resize, or reposition them; and even delete them. You can perform all these actions on an individual layer, or even on multiple layers at the same time, if you want.
Layers let you create pixels that are _not_ visible but are included in the image file. You can work in layers and manipulate the pixel data that's not visible, and the changes you make are applied to the pixel data of that layer. For example, if you paint a layer red, it's applied

It's super easy to get started with Photoshop Elements. All you need to do is sign up for a free account. For this tutorial, we'll be using a free.psd file that we downloaded from Rapid Photo Downloader. You can get it here and download it to your desktop. Let's get started.
Common Photoshop Elements Commands
You can perform the basic editing tasks in Elements using these common commands:
Paste/Move
Select
Fill
Deselect
Delete
Adjust
Clone

Outlining
If you don't know how to perform one of the commands, just read the next step for instructions. You can use the built-in help for each command on the command line. Click the Help icon at the top-right corner of the window, and select Quick Reference.
Paste/Move
Open the image you want to paste on another layer and paste it on the current layer. The image will be placed between the previous and current layers.
Select
Click the Select tool to select a portion of the image. The selection box will appear, and click the box to select the content. To deselect, use the same action but with the Select tool.
Fill
Click the Filling tool to fill a selection with the current color. To change the color or fill, use the dialog box. You can also use the Options bar to change these settings.
Deselect
Click the Deselect tool to unselect the content. Use the same action to reverse the deselect action.
Delete
Use the Eraser tool to clear the content. To delete multiple items, first select them using the Quick Selection tool or by simply drawing them with the Eraser tool. Next, press X to remove all selected items.
Adjust
Click the Adjustment tool to make tweaks to the colors, light, shadows and more. You can access the adjustment sliders by using the Options bar.
Clone
The Clone tool creates a copy of the current selection or content. You can clone a selection you made on another layer, or clone a whole layer. See this article for more information.
