An animated film version of the book "Sophie's World" was made. The author Jostein Gaarder spoke about the difficulties of writing and of the differences between writing and film:
"Writing is hard work. I read that for every book you read, you write a book of the same size. When I finished The Bridge, I wrote a book that was one-twelfth the size of my previous book. I loved to write when I was young. But I think that people who love to write do so because they love writing. When I was young, I loved to read. I think that every writer is a reader, but when you are a writer, you are also a reader. That's why you can write. But you can also read, and that is not enough.
I was a reader first. I read the four books of "The Bridge" that had been translated into English and were waiting for me to publish. I read them all at the same time, I read them in two weeks. When I was done, I was so tired that I couldn't fall asleep. I just stayed awake all night. I read several hundred pages, but I couldn't stop. But I don't think I read enough. I read a lot, but I read very little. And I think that I am at fault in the film.
I have only ever read two books in my life, and it was not enough for me. I read "Sophie's World" as a teenager and "The Mysterious Benedict Society" as a young man. I was so enthusiastic about reading that it was as if my whole body was in my ears, my eyes and my brain. I have never been able to read like that again. I think that it is in a writer's blood, that one is always a reader. It doesn't matter if you write or if you read, you are still a reader. You are a reader first and a writer second. When you are a writer, you are just at the beginning. You are on the side. You are a reader.
When I finished "The Bridge", I wrote the first draft. It was over 100 pages. I sent it to my editor and to my agent. I was so excited and also very nervous, because it was my first time. I am not a confident writer. I was
