The naive and the sophisticated, the peoples and the philosophical types, the careful and the careless, the successful and the failures, have all been subject to the irresistible influence. (I Ching, Book XIII, 48) At some point in this evolution, an alarming message emerged to the public. I have very recently met with some of the members of this august and celebrated scientific organization who advised me that while the public was being continually encouraged to embrace their body weight at the peril of their health, the medical profession and the government were unwilling to suggest any means of achieving this small change in the lifestyle of the people. They asserted that a straightforward change in the diet of the majority of the people is not sufficient in itself to bring about the necessary massive weight loss, since an additional and undesirable effect is bound to follow. As you will note, this prediction is consistent with what has been observed in the last few years and, as of yet, this prediction has not been verified. They suggested that, perhaps, the possible explanation of this august scientific body's reluctance to embrace a major shift in diet is due to the fact that the scientific community itself has not acknowledged the relevance and significance of research conducted many years ago by the American military. Not long after the Russian invasion of Afghanistan in 1979, the American military conducted a large, long-term field study of the behavior of 100,000 soldiers in several different countries (about 10 per country), over the period of a year. The purpose of the study was to determine the causes of a soldier's propensity for repeated combat injuries and to determine the relationship between physiological and psychological factors and physical performance. The study was primarily conducted in a mountainous region in the USSR, but it was also conducted in the Middle East, Asia, Europe, and South America. Because the US Army had no means of collecting and analyzing these data, the study was conducted by the Canadian Army. The report of this study was published in 1987 and is entitled "Operational Fatigue in Soldiers: Physical, Mental and Social Factors. AFSS Report 88-54-13". The following excerpt is taken from the conclusions section of the report which deals with the relationship between diet and weight.
